Dear comic lovers,

Hereby I have a question about a first edition (1953) of "The Secret of the Swordfish Volume 2" of the Blake and Mortimer series.

I have had the book in less good condition for a long time. I would like to sell it now and looked it up. Apparently there is also a version with extra thick paper, which would therefore increase the value considerably. In my opinion the paper feels thick, but of course that could just be my vain hope that affects my judgment.

Is there any other way to tell if it would be such a version? It is an unnumbered copy anyway.

Hopefully someone can help me.

Thank you in advance.

Koen

Dear Koen,

I am well acquainted with the Blake and Mortimer series but I have never encountered an unnumbered dealer copy in the version of the thick paper. I therefore have doubts about the existence of such a copy but this is my opinion and not a fact.

The only way to find out if you also have an unnumbered copy of thick paper is to compare your version with the regular release of this album.

Dear Rik, that's not a bad idea indeed. If someone from East Flanders or in the vicinity of Terneuzen can and wants to compare, you can certainly let us know. Then I would like to drop by.

Hello Rik,

I don't know any more about my book for the time being. But I'll just let you know that there is just such an unnumbered copy for sale in Catawiki's exclusive comic auction.

I thought you might find that interesting.

If the paper is thicker, shouldn't there be some difference in the thickness of the album?

Especially with an album with the thickness of swordfish 2. There should be at least 1 cm to 5 cm difference. On the other hand, it is difficult to tell from photos.

The Zwaardvis auction is an exceptionally beautiful specimen that is offered for sale by a Pro seller. I therefore now assume that this album really exists ..

I guess you mean millimeters ;-)

But has anyone ever thought of measuring how thick those books are?

Edit: Google helps:

https://www.catawiki.nl/l/265115-blake-en-mortimer-het-geheim-van-de-zwaardvis-2-hc-met-linnen-rug-1e-druk-1953

The spine is therefore 1.5 cm thick instead of the 1 cm thickness on the other copies.

Let's start with that in the details.

That's what I mean :)

I just measured my 2 swordfish. Part 1 is 0.8 cm thick and part 2 is 1.1 cm thick.

Wonder how many of those bulky unnumbered albums have been printed.

It's just a shame that the things you miss always have to cost so much!

Already offering full service, Rik? ;)

Hahahahaha

My budget is not sufficient for these auction prices ..

Wonder if he is going to tap the 2500 euros that the auctioneer has estimated.

This album was released on April 2nd. not away from an estimate of 3500 euros

(other experts, admittedly)

While it was still hammered down in 2017 at € 4570, -

P.S. Compare, among other things, the spots on the back, it is really the same copy!

@stripspeldjes

Great research!
It remains a pity that there is no longer normal access to the history of the Catawiki auctions.

At the time @Boekenmagazijn had a link through which history could be searched. Maybe Bookstore wants to share these again

I measured the thickness of my book once and so it came to 11 to 12 mm. So it will be the regular version. Worth a lot less, but still glad I know now. Thank you very much for the good tips!

If the paper is thicker  than the version with the thinner paper.
Just weigh. With such a letter scale or a good kitchen scale.
Assumption: Cardboard and number of pages otherwise identical.

Hello Magnum,
Thank you for your answer. It turned out to be the 'regular' version after all and I sold it that way a while ago.
Thank you anyway!
